Pushing For More Investment In Sarawak’s Green Energy Sector At COP28


DUBAI, Wed: Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg, now here in conjunction with COP28 this morning witnessed the signing of a MOU between Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) and Masdar of UAE at the COP28 venue. 

The MOU would open up the way for collaboration between the two entities in the development of clean energy in Sarawak as part of the State’s  green economy initiatives in line with the spirit of discussion held earlier between the Premier and MASDAR top officials. 

Earlier, the Premier and Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hassan had a brief meeting with MASDAR that touched primarily on MASDAR investment prospects in Sarawak’s quest to be the regional hub for clean energy in South East Asia. 

MASDAR with presence in more than 40 countries is one of the world’s largest renewable energy companies and a green hydrogen leader that has placed the UAE at the forefront of the energy transition.

Sarawak Energy CEO, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili signed on behalf of SEB while Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, MASDAR CEO for MASDAR. 

Earlier in the morning, Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Johari led the Sarawak delegation to a meeting with Mubadala Investment Company as part of Sarawak’s investment mission to UAE in conjunction with COP28. 

Mubadala committee member, Dr Bakheet Al Katheeri, Mubadala Investment Company CEO Shiekh Mansoor Al Hamed and UAE Ambassador to Malaysia His Excellency Dr Mubarak Saeed Al Dhaheri were among those present at the meeting.

The high-profile meeting touched on strategic partnerships between Mubadala and Sarawak with a view to intensify Sarawak’s presence in the upstream, midstream and downstream aspects of the world oil and gas industry.  

The discussions also touched on Sarawak's commitment to sustainable practices in accordance with Article 6 of the Paris accord. 

Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassa who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohd Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Malcom Mussen Lamoh,  the Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni and key government departments and agencies’ heads were also present.
